Ode to the Illnesses of Winter 2023

How frequently you have been my lot, oh snot.

My shelves crammed with vitamins Zinc, C, and D,

This oozy nose is not a state that I have sought.

Worse, my children also sniffle and beg for hot tea.

“Why can’t we go to parks, to church, see friends?”

They cry—then they sneeze on me, these children of Seay.

Will the coughing and sore throats never end?

Please stop, oh snot. Leave us alone.

Both nose and sanity would like time to mend.

I’ll fight on with chicken broth of bone

Coughing on me will become an act of treason!

Our immunity will strengthen and hone!

Coughs become unexceptional, within reason!.

Healthy kids will rush out to a world of yellow—

And I sniffle, sigh. Now it’s allergy season.

The last line made me laugh. But I must admit--and I am sorry for it--there were lines that definitely made you sound like Mrs. Bennett, "Will you stop coughing, Kitty!"

YOU try being stuck in a house with four children snotting and sneezing and coughing directly on you and see if you don't start sounding like Mrs. Bennet! :-P My poor nerves!
